2015 Bike, Walk & Kayak Tour Saturday May 2nd

2nd Annual Bike, Walk & Kayak Guided ECO Tour Saturday May 2nd 2015 at Colonial Place Norfolk VA in partnership with; Ecocycling & ODU Outdoor Adventure Program  to celebrate the health and restoration of the Lafayette River and our community ecosystem.

We will have 3 tour options during the day:

  • 10:00 am
  • 12:00 pm
  • 02:00 pm

 

Once arriving you will sign in, complete a formal waiver and be given the route que sheets.


 

Section 1: Bicycling route here  Ride only for Free, just show up!

The first section of the tour will be a TBA bike ride; Helmets required. We encourage you to bring your own set of wheels but we will also have several ODU Bike Share Bicycles available for rental and a safety course will be required for all riders. The pace will be a 8-12 MPH community & family style ride as to provide opportunities to view and learn more about our local trail & bikeway system including all the great businesses and attractions. The route is roughly 7.5 Miles and will wind through parts of the Elizabeth River Trail, ODU Campus, Colley Avenue and scenic Colonial Place.

 

Section 2: Walk route here

The second section of the tour will be an easy pedestrian stride through the Riverview Business District to the Haven Boat Ramp. We ask that all participants maintain at least a 15 minute mile and stay with the group (there will be a designated slow, medium and fast paced leader). Once returning to the start/finish point we will take a walk back through the new Wetlands boardwalk and to the kayak launch point.Be sure to bring good running/walking shoes.

Section 3: Kayak route here

The third and final section of the guided ECO tour will be a beautiful water segment on the Lafayette river. This section will require a safety life-vest and detailed briefing about proper technique before we go underway. We will paddle our kayaks along the water front south to the Norfolk Virginia Zoo taking in the beautiful vistas and sites along the shoreline. Upon reaching the Zoo we will turn back around and investigate the Oyster Reef at Granby Street Park until returning back to the launch site. We will have paddle powered vessels available but feel free to bring your own.
